How did you start as a map dealer?
Studying geography and cartography, I became interested in antiquarian maps and atlases. I set up as a dealer in 1981 and now have a worldwide clientele.

What’s the best thing about working for yourself?
The flexibility to juggle family and work commitments.

What’s the worst?
The total responsibility and need for constant multi-tasking.

What advice do you have for people keen to start a new business?
Know your market well and understand the commitment and professionalism needed
to be successful.

How has FSB membership helped you?
Today’s legal requirements can be complicated, and there’s some excellent advice offered for free. Also, FSB has events around the country where members can learn from each other.

My theme song is Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen. It has motivated me in running a business, the London marathon and in creating at an age when I should have retired.
