Employment of veterans

I have recently become a member the Eastern Region Veterans Advisory and Pensions Committee (VAPC).

An idiosyncratic organisation set up in 1920 to help veterans with pensions and other welfare issues. I set out below what the VAPC does and how members of the FSB can benefit from the skills and talents of ex-service men and women.

The VAPC works with multiple agencies to help veterans with housing, medical, financial and employment support. My role is to encourage employers to actively support the employment of veterans.


Why should you consider employing a veteran? The armed services are trained and skilled to the highest levels. Expertise ranges from senior executive leadership, through operational management, to technical and supervisory skills.

Service personnel thrive under pressure and are used to delivering against tight deadlines. A career in the armed forces promotes flexibility, loyalty, self-discipline, reliability, a strong sense of duty and commitment, the ability to use initiative and the ability to cope with change.

We have a significant military presence in the East of England and our veterans deserve a chance to use their skills and knowledge in the commercial world. I hope FSB members will now feel better able to take some action to help make that happen.
