“Meet the Maker day is a chance to discover and celebrate the unique talents we’re lucky enough to have within Otford’s shops,” says Milliner and FSB Member Jane Cave.
“We are incredibly lucky to have such a diverse range of independent shops in our beautiful village – this is an opportunity to get a sneak peek behind the scenes and a day to celebrate the collective creative talent amongst the independent businesses in Otford.
“Come and meet Bill Skinner, the man behind the name and see how his wonderful jewellery is created from initial design to finished piece. Pop in to see our amazing florist Denise Thompson to get a better understanding of the art of floristry.”
Jane confirms that Ann Bridges will be the event’s Artist in Residence, recording the day’s activities in a series of sketchbook drawings.
Local businesses involved are:
Denise Thompson - Designer Florist
Hall & Co - Women’s clothing
Howlers - Dog grooming
Otford Interiors - Upholstery
The Studio – Art gallery
Bill Skinner - Jeweller
Sally’s Cake Emporium - Bakery
Small Business Saturday UK is a grassroots, non-commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to 'shop local' and support small businesses in their communities.
The day itself takes place on the first Saturday in December each year, but the campaign aims to have a lasting impact on small businesses.
On Small Business Saturday, customers across the UK go out and support all types of small businesses, online, in offices and in stores. Many small businesses take part in the day by hosting events and offering discounts.
Mille Fleurs is offering pre-booked 45 minute millinery tasters throughout the day. Examples of their work are pictured above. To book, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
You can follow the event on Facebook via @ObviouslyOtford. Find out more about Small Business Saturday here.
