Good regulation is also good business. As well as protecting customers, it ensures fair competition and a helps build a ‘level playing field’. Local authority regulators in Kent and Medway, such as environmental health, trading standards and fire and rescue recognise that regulation and inspection is a role which protects communities as well as supporting economic growth.
This understanding is the basis of Kent and Medway Better Business for All (BBfA); a partnership between local regulatory services and businesses, including FSB.
“We can’t promise to change the law but we are keen to improve how regulation is delivered locally,” says Susan Harvey, Kent Trading Standards. “One issue that has been prioritised through BBfA is that businesses need clear access to regulatory information and advice. We want businesses to know that regulators are here to give advice to support businesses in getting it right.”
To help small businesses BBfA has a website with contacts to your local regulators plus a business start-up brochure to guide you through the regulations that may apply to you as a new or expanding business. The website also features case studies of local businesses who have benefitted from positive engagement with regulators. So visit www.BBfA.biz early on – you may well save time and money!
